Black, Dawn, 1943- : A long time activist in her community and with the New Democrats in British Columbia, Dawn Black served as Executive Assistant to Pauline Jewett, M.P., until Dr. Jewett's retirement in 1988. Ms. Black was elected to the House of Commons for New Westminster - Burnaby in 1988. Appointed NDP Critic for the Status of Women in January 1989, Dawn Black was the federal New Democratic spokesperson on reproductive choice, pay equity and violence against women, in addition to other topics of particular relevance to women. In September 1990, she assumed responsibility for all issues relating to child care.

As well as being member of the House of Commons Sub-Committee on the Status of Women, Dawn Black was on the Special Advisory Committee to the Speaker of the House and on the Panel of Chairmen of Legislative Committees of the House of Commons.

Ms. Black also served as vice-chair of the federal New Democratic caucus and was a member of the Social Policy Committee of the federal caucus. She also served on the Strategic and Election Planning Committee and the Planning and Priorities Committee.

Dawn Black was a member of the Association of Women Parliamentarians, Canadian Parliamentarians for Global Action, and the World Women Parliamentarians for Peace. She was defeated in the General Election of 1993, and returned to her professional practice of law. She was re-elected to the House for a British Columbia riding in the General Election of 24 January 2006.

Note to Researchers: the files in the Dawn Black fonds have unique colour identifiers after each file title -- [Green File], [Blue File] and [Red File]. These designations replace the actual colour striping found on the original file jackets. They are indicators of a unique style of filing which Dawn Black used in her office, namely:

[Green File] - indicates correspondence on an issue (with individuals, organizations, universities, MP's, and Cabinet Ministers; there are occasional reports, press clippings, near-print documents and speeches and conference materials)

[Blue File] - indicates reference material and research on an issue (consisting largely of press clippings, research material, reports, memos, print and near-print material, position papers and memos, with occasional correspondence)

[Red File] - indicates NDP position on it, expresses Party policy on an issue (press releases, statements in the House and elsewhere, and also speeches, press releases near-print and some memos and correspondence)
