Interview of Alex McKellar, former head cashier and paymaster at the Dominion Bridge Company. McKellar recalls his early years in the 1930s as an employee in the cashier's Office responsible for preparing the weekly payroll for 300 to 400 company employees. Describing how everything was done by hand, McKellar outlines the procedures for maintaining detailed ledgers and preparing the weekly pay envelopes for the employees who were paid in cash. McKellar also describes his other duties such as overseeing foreign exchange accounts, maintaining expense accounts, preparing bank reconciliation transactions from the company branches across Canada and preparing daily and monthly budget reports. The company Recreation Club was also of great interest to McKellar and he discusses his role of President and Treasurer of the organization and the many bowling, hockey and tennis leagues within the company and in the community. Wrapping up the interview, McKellar discusses the many changes in the financial management of the company and comments on employees and managers he worked with over the years at Dominion Bridge.
