Interview of "John" (Jean Baptiste) Leclare, former estimator in the Mechanical Drawing Office with the Dominion Bridge Company in Lachine, Quebec. Leclare recalls his first job in 1908 as a machinist for 22¢ an hour for a 60 hour week. Focusing on the working conditions at Dominion Bridge in the early years, Leclare remembers the cold, unheated sheds where the men had trouble keeping the machinery from freezing, the long working hours with no paid holidays or sick leave, and the lack of safety equipment or procedures. During World War I, Leclare worked on the production of 18 pound shells and other munitions. Some of the projects Leclare worked on over the years include crane shafts, gears, bearings parts for bridges, the head gates for the West Kootenay River Power Corporation and the "Tillsoil" tractor as well as anti-aircraft guns and "triple expansion" marine engines during World War II. Throughout the interview, Leclare comments on several employees and executives he worked with at Dominion Bridge.
