Interview of Cliff L. Young, former erection foreman at the Dominion Bridge Company in Toronto, Ontario. Young recalls his first job with the company as a "connector" in 1928 when he worked on the building of Swifts Company for 45¢ an hour. Some of the projects Young worked on over the years are: the General Motors Company at Oshawa; the Schumacher Mines; Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto; Simpson's, Eaton's and the Canadian National Exhibition buildings in Toronto; and the coal and gold mines at Sioux Lookout and Levack, Ontario. Turning to the working conditions, Young discusses the heavy manual labour involved in hauling heavy equipment and steel on the job site, the many out of town construction jobs when the employees boarded in rooming houses - some infested with bed bugs, and the massive layoffs during the depression years. During World War II, Young worked on such projects as the de Havilland Aircraft Co., Malton Airport (Toronto), and the production of shells for the Allied forces. Rounding out the interview, Young discusses what he views as the undesirable changes in the company over the years such as the lack of pride in workmanship by the employees, a distant, centralized management and the lack of supervision by the foremen and supervisors on the job sites.
