Interview of Dwight J. Rockwell who worked for Rob Engineering Works Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dominion Bridge Company in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Rockwell, who retired after 47 years with the company, recalls his apprenticesip as a draftsman at Robbs beginning in 1917 when he earned $3 per week during his three-year apprenticeship. Beginning with his early work drawing blueprints for marine engines, various platework and boilers, Rockwell continues with his later work as an estimator for contracts. Also discussion of the decision by Dominion Bridge management to close Robb Engineering in 1921 and the role played by D.W. Robb, a son of the company's founder, in convincing the parent company to reverse the decision after the workers at Robbs agreed to wage cuts. During World War I, Robb Engineering fabricated "triple expansion marine engines" for the French government, the Imperial Munitions Board in Canada, the Canadian Merchant Marine and the Scottish Merchant Marine, as well as boilers and shells. In the Second World War, the company fabricated shells, auxilliary pumping engines, iron castings for marine boilers, paravanes for minesweeping and derrick posts and funnels for cargo ships. Concluding the interview, Rockwell discusses various employees at Robb including several members of his own family, members of the Robb family who founded the company, John O'Neill, foreman of the boiler shop, Frank Mackenzie, general manager at Robbs and Palmer Savage, former vice-president of the Eastern Division of the Dominion Bridge Company.
