Press conference held by the Executive Committee of the newly-established Consumer Information Office on the Goods and Services Tax: Nicholas Murray (Chairman), Brian [Phileski] and Louise Fecteau (Vice-Chairpersons) and John Hoyles (Executive Director). In his opening statement, Murray describes the objectives and mandate of the Office which is to inform consumers on the change-over from the Federal Sales Tax to the GST and on how the new tax affects consumer prices. Issues raised by the media include: the role of the Office in promoting public acceptance of the GST; the mechanisms and perametres of its mandate; and the costs and benefits of the Office to consumers. A follow-up conference is held by opposition critics Russell MacLellan (Liberal Party) and Phil Edmondston (New Democratic Party) opposing the establishment of the Office. Specific issues raised include the non-availability of information on consumer prices; the alleged independent status of the Office; and the overall rejection of the GST by the public.
