A north woods melodrama. Jacques Doré (William H. Tooker), a villainous whisky trader, narrowly escapes capture by Royal North-West Mounted Police constables Williams and Hamilton, briefly resorting to the use of a stolen automobile, but loses his horses and wagon and its load of whisky. ‘Poleon (Cesare Gravina) and his part French, part Indian, daughter Oachi (Hope Sutherland) live a carefree existence in the north woods.~Doré is injured in a storm before he comes on their cabin. Unaware that he is on the run, they readily offer him hospitably but when he forces his attentions on Oachi her father drives him away. He makes his way to a saloon where he plays cards but twice draws the Ace of Spades which the locals call the devil’s finger. The superstitious Doré realizes that he has lost his lucky rattlesnake amulet during his struggle with Oachi and is terror-stricken.~Doré resumes his flight toward the United States border and away from the Mounties. Distancing himself from his old haunts, he comes on the cabin of a young couple, André (Fred C. Jones) and Marie (Gladys Leslie), where he is again welcomed, only to be thrashed soundly by André after he makes advances to Marie. Marie falls ill and, seeing André head off to the police barracks to fetch a doctor, the vengeful Doré returns and kidnaps her. Marie escapes and throws herself into a swollen river. Next day she is found unconscious by Oachi and taken to her home.~Doré, now crazy with fear, starts hallucinating, first seeing ‘Poleon and Oachi, then Marie and finally André. He fires his revolver at ‘André’ and draws the attention of constables Williams and Hamilton.~He arrives at Marie’s cabin where she is being treated by a Mounted Police doctor. When Doré sees her he drops dead. The two constables enter, recognize Doré, and realize their long hunt is over. ‘Poleon and Oachi head for home by canoe. Except for the Mounties, all the characters are French Canadians. <53mn 14s>

The American Film Institue Catalog of Feature Films claims that the script is based on the 1915, James Oliver Curwood novel "God's Country - and the Woman" but this is not the case.~5. There are shots of downtown Montréal including: an intersection with streetcars passing; the department store Au Bon Marché (Letendre Limited/Letendre, fils & cie.), then located at 635 Saint Catherine Street East (on the north side, at the corner of Montcalm, opposite the Ouimetoscope cinema); a fashion show in a shop window.
