Interview of Cape Breton storyteller Joe Neil MacNeil and John Shaw, who has translated MacNeil's Gaelic stories into English, about: the Gaelic tradition of telling stories; the function of the traditional stories to assist in the social development of children; some favourite folk tales from ancient times; how the storyteller would remember the tales; storytelling as a pastime on long winter nights; and how many stories have been forgotten over time.~MacNeil also discusses his preference for stories about heroes, giants and witches. He comments on the loss of Gaelic culture in Cape Breton in the early part of the century, when Gaelic-speaking parents did not stress the importance of retaining the language and schools encouraged the speaking of English. Shaw predicts that Gaelic won't last much longer in Cape Breton. He says, however, that society is placing more value on minority cultures and that there is more of an effort being made to preserve Gaelic culture in terms of its language, songs and music rather than superficial aspects such as Scottish costumes and ceremonies that are not part of Cape Breton tradition.
