Interview of Cape Breton native Don McDermid, about life on Cape Breton at the turn of the century. He talks about: the survival of the Gaelic language on Cape Breton; the decline in the number of people who now are able to speak Gaelic; and pressure on children years ago to speak English in school.~McDermid also talks about the history of Cape Breton, the role of the church in the life of the community, and the attitude in years past that pleasure was a sin. Unlike the Scots of the Roman Catholic faith on Cape Breton, the Protestant Scots on Cape Breton did not have a rich tradition of dancing and fiddle music because of the attitude that pleasure was sinful. There might be a bit of entertainment at weddings and other special occasions, however, and McDermid maintains that the people were happy nonetheless. He tells some anecdotes in Gaelic.~McDermid talks about the story-telling tradition of his ancestors, a tradition that was based on ghost stories. He tells some old stories. McDermid explains that story-telling is no longer as important because the Cape Bretoners of the past were closer to nature, more primitive, and more open to belief in the supernatural. The traditions provided a continuity for young people, who are now forced to leave Cape Breton in search of employment. The interview concludes with some music about Cape Breton, interspersed with some comments by McDermid about Cape Breton and rural Quebec not being "North Americanized".
