Documentary about the Canadian forest industry. It consists of interviews of the following: Ken [Greaves] of the Ontario Forest Industries Association; Ted Boswell of E.B. Eddy Forest Products; John [Tate] of Abitibi-Price Incorporated; [Maurice McKay] of Great Lake Forest Products Limited and Andy [Fleming] of Domtar Inc. They discuss: the prevention of forest fires; the need for government and industry to cooperate in forest fire prevention; the economic recession; the decline in the price of newsprint and layoffs of forest industry workers. [McKay] says that the forest industry, trappers, canoers, hunters, tour operators should share available forest lands. In his opinion, some timber cutting could be carried on within wilderness parks and still conserve forest resources. [Fleming] says that the forest industry needs the forest for five or six years at a time, after which it has time to grow back and be available to other users. He also comments on the disadvantages of allowing forests to get too old without cutting down some of the trees. Overmature trees fall down and make the forest more susceptible to fire.
