This documentary chronicles the fascinating yet contentious relationship between Prime Minister Trudeau and the media from the early days of "Trudeaumania" in 1968 to the strained and mutually cynical relationship ten years later. Clips of the 1968 Liberal leadership convention reveal scenes of pandemonium as Trudeau becomes the centre of the media's attention. However, by 1969, at the Commonwealth Conference in London, England, Trudeau is heard criticizing the media for fomenting speculation about his private life, an incident seen as the turning point in the worsening relationship between himself and the media. Commenting on Trudeau's decision to cancel the daily "scrum" sessions after a shoving incident with a reporter and initiate weekly news conferences, journalist Allan Fotheringham notes that the change pleased the newspaper and feature writers and displeased the television and radio reporters who felt they could no longer "catch the Prime Minister off guard". As 1977 approached, Fotheringham compares the restraint shown by the Canadian media concerning Trudeau's marital troubles to the "yellow press" coverage by the foreign press. Summing up the ten years of intense scrutiny by the media, writer Marjorie Nichols contends that Trudeau remains an "enigma" and Madeline Poulin observes that Trudeau "represents in himself all the contradictions of this country". Also interviewed on the theme of Trudeau and the media are journalists Doug Fisher, Val Sears, Larry Zolf, Richard Gwyn, Jeffrey Stevens, Ken Colby, Bruce Phillips, Gilles Courtemanche, and Al Johnson, President of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
