Although inscribed C.M.B. on the verso, it is believed that this portrait miniature was painted by Cornelius Durham (flourishing 1825-1865). The miniature is identical to another portrait of Ogle, by Durham, dated 1846, that was offered at a later auction sale in Geneva in 1985. Sir Charles Ogle (1775-1858) entered the British Navy in 1787 and was Commander-in-Chief in North America from 1827 to 1830, and at Portsmouth from 1845 to 1858. He was made Vice-Admiral in 1830, Admiral in 1841 and Admiral of the Fleet in 1857. He married three times: in 1802 Charlotte Margaret Gage (daughter of General Thomas Gage) she died in 1814, in 1820 Letitia Burroughs (daughter of Sir William Buroughs, Bart.) she died in 1832, and lastly Mary Anne Cary (daughter of George Cary of Tor Abbey, Devon) she died in 1842.
