Canada. Commission of Inquiry into Casualty to British Steamship "Empress of Ireland" : On 29 May 1914 a collision occurred between the Canadian Pacific Steamship Empress of Ireland and the Norwegian steamship Storstadt in the St. Lawrence River. Over a 1000 people were lost and it remains one of the worst shipping disasters in Canadian history. A preliminary inquiry was held at Montreal and Quebec from 31 May to 5 June before Commander Lindsay. A formal investigation was then held in Quebec from 6 June to 27 June, before Lord Mersey, Judge E.C. McLeod, and Sir A.A.
