Canadian Arctic Expedition (1913-1918) : The Canadian Arctic Expedition was established by Order in Council 406 of 22 February 1913 under the Department of the Naval Service. The Departments of the Naval Service, the Geological Survey, Marine and Fisheries, of Interior, Customs, cooperated toward the fitting out and providing the personnel of this expedition, while the general direction of the expedition was entrusted to the Department of the Naval Service. Vilhjalmur Stefansson was placed in command of the expedition, which was divided into two parties: the first for geographical exploration, headed by Stefansson; and the second, under Dr. R.M. Anderson, for scientific investigation. The main objectives of the expedition were: to explore as great a part as possible of the million or so square miles of unknown area north of the continent of North America and west of the Parry Islands; to gather scientific information and collections in the department of oceanography, geography, geology, zoology, botany, ethnology, and archaeology; and to take tidal, meteorological and magnetic observations. Registry files relating to the expedition are also included in the files described in the Subject file classification system series (MIKAN 134556, RG42-C-1). Although these files were created by the Department of the Naval Service, they were later transferred to the Marine Branch of the Department of Marine and Fisheries and incorporated into their registry system.
