Interview of Sara Tuomi by Raili Nieminen for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Sara Tuomi was born in Korkeakoski, Finland on 8-5-1903. She came to Canada in 1925 on a ship called “Gripsholm,” of Swedish-American Lines. She married in 1926 and lived in Gorham Township, among the first residents of Pike Lake. Her husband came here as a child with his mother. He did independent bushwork on his own land. They were members of the Pike Lake branch of the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) for seventeen years. The branch operated from Tarmola Hall. Tuomi was the lead of “Pioneers” in Pike Lake. She acted in many plays there, and also held Educational Groups. An athletic field was built by the members, and “Vakeva” was the name of the Sport Club. Oiva Maunu co-ordinated it. The hall burned down, but Tuomi is not sure of the year. They moved to Sunshine and kept a Co-op store for 6 years. They also ran the post office there. They moved to Port Arthur, and she joined the FOC there, but her husband didn't. They were both members of the Communist Party. She belonged to the theatre committee. In 1949-1950, she was no longer an FOC member. Now in Kaiku Choir. Her husband died in 1953. Tuomi or her husband was on the Pike Lake Co-op Managing Committee. Her husband drove a truck for the Co-op Bakery for one year. Husband's mother, Josefina Tuominen, came here with five children. They lived on a farm in Lappe. She was a cupper, masseuse and midwife. She supported the FOC and wrote poetry. <45mn>
