Collection consists of 4 photographs, all relating to Robert James Alwell, Toronto letter carrier from 1889-1920. The donor, Mrs. R. Gillespie, is a descendant of Alwell's. The collection is comprised of 1 photograph of Alwell's first wife (ca. 1875), 1 photograph of Alwell standing on the steps of a Chicago City Railway car (ca. 1880), 1 photograph of Alwell and his second wife (nee Dalton) seated, and Mrs. Alwell's niece standing (ca. 1925), and 1 photograph of a service medal awarded ca. 1915 to R.J. Alwell (1975). The original medal is owned by the Royal Ontario Museum.

Alwell, Robert James : Robert James (R.J.) Alwell was born 24 May, 1856, in Guelph, Ont. On the 31st of December, 1889, he was appointed to the rank of Letter Carrier with the Canadian civil service. He served at this post in the Toronto area, from 1889 to 1920. Alwell died ca. 1931. Civil Service List of Canada, 1897
