Interview of Eini Tuomi by Raili Nieminen for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Eini Tuomi was born in Hirsilä, in Häme district, Finland on 11-2-1920, and came to Canada in August 1923 with her parents. Her father worked in bushcamps, then on road construction. In 1927 they moved onto a homestead lot in Pike Lake. Both parents became members of the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC), farmers club and defense league, and took part in Education Groups. Tuomi was a member of the FOC too and was in Pioneers as a child. She took part in Pioneer activities at Isku Park. Kerttii Koski and Martha Kissanen led Pioneers. In June 1934, the International Co-op was founded and existed for eleven and a half years. The building was an addition onto the home of Toivo Jarvi, her father. Once weekly a truck came to bring supplies there. Farmers brought eggs there to be taken to town and sold. They were members of the Co-op Store and Dairy, and sold milk to Dairy in 1957. Wages at the Co-op at first were $8 per month and later $35-$40 per month. Tuomi worked at the store, helping her father for $4 per month. This later increased to $5. She sold gasoline as well at the Co-op store. Food and gas were rationed. The Pike Lake Store went out of business in January 1945. <30mn>
