Interview of Lempi and Charles Pelto by Helena Doherty for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Both were born in Canada, while their parents were from Finland. Mrs. Pelto was born on April 1, 1917 and Mr. Pelto on June 1, 1917. Both lifetime residents of Nolalu, with fathers who did farming and bushwork. Mr. Pelto is retired, but was a bushworker all his life. He worked in Great Lakes camps. Conditions were poor in the 1930s but they improved. He was a member of the Lumber and Sawmills Workers Union. Both were members of the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) in Nolalu, after joining around 1938. The first FOC hall burned in or around 1924, and the second hall was built shortly after. At one time, it had about 40 families as members. It also had an active theatre group, with 12-15 plays per year at one time. The hall was locked up during war, and eventually burned accidentally. Mrs. Pelto was the secretary treasurer of the FOC, and prompter. Mr. Pelto was in the sports group. Both took part in plays. Speakers came to Nolalu, and there were socials, dances to raise money for defense league, strikes, etc. Mrs. Pelto worked at the Co-op in Nolalu. Ladies' Guild. Started as Farmers' Mercantile. Business was good for a long time, with two stores at one time. It amalgamated with the International Co-op, and business suffered as a result. The Co-op was closed down shortly after the amalgamation. <35mn>
