The fonds consists of three parts:

1. Transcripts of material related to Sir George Prevost (1810-1815). The documents transcribed are : parts one and two of Sir George Prevost's memorial book relating chiefly to military matters while he was Governor General and Commander-in-Chief, 1811-1815, (10 cm); extracts from three letterbooks, 1811-1814, including recommendations, appointments, requests (3 cm); and notations for commissions and promotions,1810-1815, which consists of a list of officers noted for promotion and of gentlemen noted for commissions relating to both Nova Scotia and Canada (18 p.).

2. One microfilm containing correspondence, diaries, addresses, copies of official gazettes, maps and genealogical notes accumulated by or relating to Major General Sir Augustin Prevost and Sir George Prevost, as well as other members of the family.

3. Original documents (1780-1923) including the secret orders to Lt.Gen.Prevost from Lord Bathurst, 3 June 1814; private letters of Sir George Prevost to his wife, 1808-1809; private letters to Prevost from Dukes of Kent, Cumberland and York, 1808-1815; a 1809 signal book; addresses from the inhabitants to Prevost, 1802-1815; a journal written by James Morris, Superintendent of Sable Island, 1807-1809; documents related to the marriage and the children of Sir George Prevost and Catherine Anne Phipps, 1811-1895; and newspaper clippings related to Augustine Prevost, 1780 and Sir George Prevost's career, 1805-1915.

Prevost, George, Sir, 1767-1816 : Sir George Prevost was Lieutenant-Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Nova Scotia from 1808 to 1811, when he became Administrator of Lower Canada, succeeding Sir James Craig. In 1812, he became Governor of Lower Canada, Governor-in-Chief of British North America and nominally Commander-in-Chief of His Majesty's Forces in Upper Canada. He was summoned to England in 1815. He married Catherine Anne, daughter of Major-General John Phipps, 1789, and had a son, George and two daughters who died unmarried.

Prevost, Augustin, 1723-1786 : Major-General Augustin Prevost served under Wolfe. He married Anne, daughter of Chevalier George Grand of Amsterdam. Augustin Prevost was the father of Sir George Prevost.

General note:

The transcripts (part 1 of the fonds) were prepared in 1923 and in 1924 from originals owned by Sir Charles Prevost, Gloucestershire, England. The microfilm (part 2 of the fonds) was prepared in 1989 from originals in the possession of Sir Christopher Prevost, England. Originals (part 3 of the fonds) were acquired in 2004 from Sir Christopher Prevost. Some documents in part 3 were also microfilmed in part 2 but those two parts of the fonds does not exactly coincide. Some documents microfilmed in 1989 have been acquired by the Royal Green Jackets Museum in Winchester, England.
