Roy Mannila was born and educated in Nipigon, Ontario. His mother died when he was young, and he was looked after by Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) people. He was taught to read and write Finnish. He speaks extensively on the Finnish socialist movement in the Nipigon - Red Rock area, and describes the circumstances around the building of the FOC Hall. He speaks of the activities of the Young Communist League and of his impression of well-known communist and socialist leaders of his time (ie Oscar Ryan, A.E. Smith, Harry Bryan).
