British North America Philatelic Society : The British North America Philatelic Society, Ltd., BNAPS, is a philatelic specialist group for collectors and researchers of the stamps, postal markings, and postal history of Canada, the pre-Confederation colonies, and Newfoundland.
BNAPS was founded in 1943 by Mr. Jack Levine who assembled a group of other philatelists who shared his interests in the postage stamps and postal history of British North America. The constitution and by-laws were approved at the first regular meeting that year. The society journal BNA Topics was launched in 1944, the Sales Department was started the same year, the Society established a Library in 1945, and published its first Yearbook in 1946, and held its first convention and exhibition in 1949.
The society became The British North America Philatelic Society Ltd. in 1987, a tax-exempt corporation, accompanied by a move of its registered office to Wisconsin and new By-laws. In 1993, the Society established a Speakers Bureau to provide speakers for organized philatelic shows or other meetings scheduled by BNAPS, and an Ambassadorship Program to to staff Society tables at these shows. The same year, the BNAPS Library was dispersed, with many items going to the Canadian Postal Archives library and the American Philatelic Research Library, and other items auctioned off. BNAPS has grown to publish both a journal and a newsletter (BNAPortraitS); and include numerous departments; committees; regional groups; and specialized study groups, the latter with their own elected officials and newsletters. Sometimes these newsletters are developed into specialized handbooks produced by the BNAPS Handbook Committee. There are also philatelic exchange circuits for members to dispose of unwanted BNA material and add new items to their collections, each circuit with its own manager. .
