Interview of Aarne Luoto by Raili Nieminen and Helena Doherty for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Aarne Luoto was born in Turun Saaristo, Finland, on 11-9-1897. He came to Canada in February, 1927 by a ship named “Stockholm,” Swedish-American Lines. He landed at Halifax, then went to Winnipeg where he worked on a farm for one month. He then moved to Port Arthur and lived there for 15 years. He was a sailor in Finland. He was a member of the Lumber Workers Industrial Union (LWIU) (Hautamäen Union) in 1929, and was a union delegate in Port Arthur. He speaks about helping to pull Viljo Rosvall's body out of the water; the policeman who was there also was a man named Higgins. Luoto was never involved in any unions in Fort Frances, but was a member of the Communist party in Port Arthur. He was at a Pigeon Timber Camp in Nipigon. He was Secretary of “International Laborers” (Työväen Kansainvälinen Apu) in the 1930s. This organization was in existence only long enough to pay debts from strikes. Luoto was also a member of Canadian Työväin Puolustusliitto, which helped those who faced deportation. He was on Co-op executive for 10 years in Port Arthur, and had worked on founding Co-ops in Geraldton, Nipigon, and Harkett between 1935-1940. He was the manager of the Emo Co-op for eleven months, and took a Co-op managers course in 1932; the teachers were Suksi, Makela, Salo. He had his own business in Emo for sixteen years. He joined the Port Arthur Branch of the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) shortly after he moved there. The FOC held benefit programs for Spanish children at St. Paul's Church. <120mn>
