Interview of John E. Jackson by Raili Nieminen for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. John E. Jackson was born in Kauhajoki, Vaasa district, Finland on March 25, 1893. He came by ship in the fall of 1910 to Montreal. He lived in the Fort William area, and worked on the railroad in 1916, first for CPR, then for CNR. The pay was 20 cents per hour. The American Federation of Labor was the union they had to join. It was a “bourgeois union.” Meetings were drinking parties. He joined the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) in 1911, but is no longer a member. He was a paid director for theatrical productions in 1936 and a make-up man for many years. Felix Hyrske was a Labour Temple director, and also a good actor. Jackson had the lead in a play called “Mrs. ja Mestari Kankainen” and liked the role very much. He has written a few plays himself. The FOC was a political organization and ran into trouble with the government. Fort William hall lost pianos and other equipment when it was locked during the war. Mrs. Jackson was a costume-mistress for the plays. Earlier activities were held 3 nights per week. Unemployed were assisted at the Fort William hall during poor times. Jackson was a Co-op member. The Co-op was too strict in that managers and employees almost had to be FOC members. Since 1929 Jackson has made about 100 violins and repaired many, also “bontro”: made from maple and spruce wood. <105mn>
