Interview of Otto Huntus by Raili Nieminen and Helena Doherty for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Otto Huntus was born in the Vaasa district of Finland, November 9, 1899. He came to Canada in 1925 and came straight to Nipigon from Quebec, where he landed. He did bushwork all around the Thunder Bay area. In 1945, he began working as a carpenter. He had also done some carpentering in Finland. At first, conditions and wages were poor. They got worse in the 1930s, but later improved. He joined Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) as soon as he came to Canada. It was organized before he came here, and was started in the USA. It was formerly known as One Big Union (OBU) in Canada. It was not a politically inclined union. Activities were held at the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) Hall, until the split occurred. Huntus was never a FOC member (more politically oriented organization). He joined the carpenters' union local in Nipigon when he began doing carpentry, and was a member of the Co-op as long as it was in operation. He was on the executive for some time. There were rebates at year's end for all purchases; a certain percentage, depending on how good the business was during the year. Too much credit given. <35mn>
