Interview of Gertie Gronroos by Helena Doherty for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Gertie Gronroos was born in Port Arthur Feb 6, 1917. Her parents came from Siikajoki, Oulu district (mother in 1912, father in 1913). Her father worked on the railway in the bush, and as a commercial fisherman before moving to farm in North Branch in 1925. Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) in North Branch: Hall built around 1920-21. The FOC hosted cultural activities, plays, and fundraising for hall building, strikers, unemployed, Vapaus newspaper, Farmers' Unity League, defence in court for jailed political activists. It was active for many years, with the height of activity from 1925 through the 1930s. The Hall was not locked by the government during war, as it was not officially a FOC Hall. They had no problems from government. There was a decline of activity after war. Speakers visited the Hall often. Gronroos discusses Sanna Kannasto, and her role in the FOC in North Branch. There was a near split because of her ideas. She speaks about summer festivals; YCL (Young Communist League) and Pioneers youth groups; lumber camps in the 1930s and 40s. These camps were unionized, but women were not allowed to join. Strikers were supported by small farmers. Co-ops: Gronroos's father was the representative of Current River at Co-op founding meetings. Sold shares on board of directors of Co-op dairy for 10 years. Competition overtakes International Co-op. Worked in Workmen's Co-operative Restaurant & Farms, which had questionable management but was a good business while it lasted. Contribution of Finnish people to the whole community. <45mn>
