Interview of Mary Erickson by Raili Nieminen and Helena Doherty for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Mary Erickson was born in Jalasjärvi, Finland, May 14, 1909. She came to Canada in 1911, when she was 2 years old. Her first residence in Canada was in Wolf Siding (now Finland, Ont.), and she moved to Nolalu later. She says her father came across on a ship called the Mayflower, ahead of her mother and the children. He was a farmer and bushworker. Erickson was married in 1930. Her husband worked in the bush. Member of Bushworkers' Union. Delegates from Port Arthur organized unions. She had no involvement in strikes except sympathy strikes. The Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) in Wolf Siding held programs to raise money for strikers in Port Arthur. Erickson was a cook in a bushcamp for some time before getting married, and her wage was $75 per month. She was a member of the FOC most of her life. “Pioneers” or “Ihanneliitto” were children's groups. Nuorisoliitto was a youth group belonging to the FOC. During war times, police searched houses, locked the FOC Hall, etc. Speakers who came to the FOC Hall included Sanna Kannasto, Alfred Hautamaki, A.T. Hill. Many plays were held there. Activities declined, and the Hall burned down years later. <25mn>
