Interview in Finnish of Henry Anttila by Raili Nieminen for the Multicultural History Society of Ontario about Finnish Canadians. Elma Anttila is also present. Anttila was born in the Ahtari District of Finland on October 29, 1902. He came to Canada on April 23, 1923 by ship, and landed in Newfoundland. His sister came earlier, in 1911. Anttila worked in construction in Finland, and in Canada worked on grain elevator construction for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, for 25 cents per hour. Carpenters got 45 cents to 50 cents per hour. No vacations. The Fort William branch of the Finnish Organization of Canada (FOC) was established in 1907, and closed during WWII. It promoted early unionization. 10 men from the Fort William Branch of the FOC went to Spain. Theatre had paid directors; Mrs. Artman, Ville Airola, Kuuno Sevander, who later went to USSR, Kalle Sevander, Viljo Nyberg, Viljo Kankainen, Kääriäinen, Lapinsalo. Mr. Anttila has written a play called “Uusi Kevät” (New Spring), but there are no copies of it anymore. He has been a member of the Lumber Workers Industrial Union (LWIU), but never took part in any strikes, except in the big Bushworkers' strike in 1926-1927. Kalle Salo and Edwin Suski were union organizers at the time. Anttila was a founding member of International Co-op in 1924-25. He was on the executive for 10 years, president 3 years, and quit to go into business for himself. Mrs. Anttila worked in the Co-op Bakery for 5 years. Made $45 per month in 1928-29. Some managers were good and some were poor, and there were people out to sabotage the Co-op involved as well. The manager was Lauri Simelius. Prices were competitive with other bakeries. <60mn>
