The International Maritime Committee is a non-governmental international organization that was founded in Antwerp in 1897 to establish a unified international code of maritime law.

The Committee hosts diplomatic conferences to establish multilateral treaties and ratify conventions. Diplomatic conferences were held in London (1910); Brussels (1922, 1924 and 1926); Genoa (1925); Amsterdam (1927); Warsaw (1928) and Oslo (1933).

The Canadian Maritime Law Association was founded in 1951 and currently represents Canada on the International Maritime Committee.

The Department of Marine and Fisheries was renamed the Department of Marine. On November 2, 1936, it merged with the Civil Aviation Branch of the Department of National Defence and the Department of Railways and Canals to form the Department of Transport.
