Canadian Northern Ontario Railway Company : The Canadian Northern Ontario Railway Company was the former James Bay Railway Company, whose name had been changed and charter enlarged under Dominion Order in Council (P.C. 1193, 25 June 1906). It was designed both to provide a connection between the Canadian Northern lines west of Port Arthur and those in Quebec and to provide east and west connections from Toronto. Thus, in addition to the earlier James Bay Railway line from Toronto north of Sudbury, there was constructed a line from Sudbury north to Capreol. From Capreol a railway was built west to Port Arthur and east to Ottawa. Another line was built from Toronto to Ottawa and an extension east from Ottawa to Hawkesbury, where it connected with the Canadian Northern Quebec Railway. These lines totaling over 1,260 miles were completed between 1908 and 1916. The stock of the company was handed over to the Canadian Northern Railway in 1914. On 11 June 1956 the Canadian Northern Ontario Railway Company amalgamated with and took the name of Canadian National Railway Company. RG30 General Inventory
