Series consists of records relating to Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) subsidiaries in which Joseph Pope took an active interest. The files contain correspondence, financial balance sheets, shareholders lists, and copies of leases, acts and other legal information on the formation, management and decline of these railways. Included in the series are files on the Canada Southern Railway documenting the transactions of minority shareholders as handled by Pope & Co. The Massawippi Valley Railway Company files pertain to Pope's lawsuit against the CPR over minority shareholder rights. This case was similar in nature to the O&Q lawsuit. Records pertaining to the lawsuit include correspondence, legal records, company balance sheets and copies of historical documents used to develop a case. The Quebec Central Railway Company files document Pope's efforts to become a director of the company, and the management of railway company when CP was in the process of abandonning the line. There are also files relating to the O&Q, the New Brunswick and Canada Railway Company and the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Railway which pertain to various matters including taxes and bond payments.
