Sub-series consists of records created and maintained by the Midland Railway of Canada and includes minutes,1882-1892, stock records, 1876-1896, fiscal records, 1873-1896, statistics, 1872-1885, property records, 1853-1903, right of way records, 1872-1881, land register, 1853-1909, bills and accounts 1879-1880, and shares trandfer ledger 1881-1883.

Cartographic material (RG30M 80103/64) consists of a right of way plan of the Millbrook to Peterborough section of the Port Hope, Lindsay and Beaverton Railway passing through Monaghan Township, ca. 1858, and signed by W.H. Ellis, C.E. and Provincial Land Surveyor. Land ownership detail is given.

Midland Railway of Canada : Under Province of Canada Act, 10 Vic., Cap. 109 of 30 October 1846, the Peterborough and Port Hope Railway Company was incorporated to build a line from Peterborough to Port Hope. The name was changed under Province of Canada Act, 18 Vic., Cap. 36 of 18 December 1854 to the Port Hope, Lindsay and Beaverton Railway Company which constructed and opened for traffic 55.08 miles of railway in 1857 and 1858. The name once again changed to the Midland Railway of Canada by Ontario Act, 33 Vic., Cap. 31 on 24 December 1869. By 1879 this Company was operating over 137.82 miles of line between Port Hope and Midland.

In 1876 the line of Toronto and Nipissing Railway Company was leased. Under Ontario Act, 45 Vic., Cap. 67, 10 March 1882, effective 1 April 1882, the Midland Railway of Canada, the Grand Junction Railway Company, the Toronto and Nipissing Railway Company, the Toronto and Ottawa Railway Company, the Victoria Railway Company and the Whitby, Port Perry and Lindsay Railway Company were consolidated into one company under the name the Midland Railway of Canada. With the Lake Simcoe Junction Railway, which had been on lease to the Toronto and Nipissing, the Midland had 448.30 miles of railroad in operation. It also had an interest in the Midland Elevator and Forwarding Company Limited.

On 1 January 1884 the Midland Railway system, including Lake Simcoe Junction was leased to the Grand Trunk. Under Dominion Act, 56 Vic., Cap. 47 of 1 April 1893, the Midland Railway formally amalgamated with and took the name of the Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada. Following this acquisition of the Midland the Grand Trunk acquired, in 1888, the Peterborough and Chemong Lake Railway Company, which connected with Midland. RG30 General Inventory
