Documentary about scientific studies on the adaptability and tolerance to cold of Eskimos in Canada's Arctic. Dr. J. Sandford Hart of the Animal Physiology lab at the National Research Council provides an introduction to the film. The national team of scientists who will be conducting a study in Cumberland Sound, are headed by the National Research Council and the National Defence Research Board. Scientists include: Dr. Floent De Poca (National Research Council), Gordon Foy (Atomic Energy), Dr. Bisabeen (Dalhousie University), Dr. Lawrence Irving (Alaska), Dr. J. Sandford Hart (National Research Council), Dr. Chris Lang Anderson (Norway), Dr. H.D. Hamil (Univesity of Pennsylvania), and Dr. Gildes (Defense Research Board and University of Manitoba). Robert Anderson speaks with Dr. Gildes (who studied Old Crow Indians in the Yukon), Dr. Lang Anderson (who conducted a scientific expedition in Chile), Dr. Irving and Dr. Hart (who led a scientific Australian expedition). The scientific study in Pangnirtung tested against two subjects at a time, one from the community and one from the "southern region". Heart rate, body temperature, brain waves were measured. The following original description is not accurate and the names of the people mentioned are not featured in this documentary. Perhaps they are featured in Polar People? Included are profiles of: Berthe, a tinsmith who moved from Fort Chimo to Churchill; his friend Jasper, a carver; Simonie, a "cat-operator", carpenter, interpreter, labour boss, honorary aide-de-camp to Governor General Vincent Massey on his first tour of the Arctic, and a delegate at Queen Elizabeth's Coronation; Minnie Aodla, interpreter and assistant to the Welfare Officer in Frobisher Bay; Transair Ltd. flight attendant Anne Witaltuk; and Bill Ooonahan, owner of a restaurant that serves authentic Eskimo dishes, and assistant cook at the Northern Affairs Rehabilitation Centre in Frobisher Bay. <30mn>
