Hamilton and Toronto Railway Company (1846-1871) : The charter granted to the Hamilton and Toronto Railway Company in December 1846 (Statutes of Canada, 10 Vic., Cap. 110) lapsed, presumably through failure to implement the undertaking, so it was reincorporated in 10 November 1852 (Statutes of Canada, 16 Vic., Cap. 44) to build a railroad from the Great Western terminus in Hamilton to Toronto. Under this Act, the financial arrangements of the two railways were linked and the legislation regarding one applied equally to the other. The 37 miles of line was opened for traffic in December 1855. The Hamilton and Toronto amalgamated with and took the name of the Great Western Railway Company on 14 April 1871.
