Rail and River Coal Company : The Rail and River Coal Company was incorporated on 21 June 1907 under the laws of the state of West Virginia to take over and operate the properties of the Empire Coal Mining Company. Neighbouring coal property was also acquired. The Grand Trunk commenced negotiations for the purchase of this company in December 1911 and effective 1 April 1912, ownership was obtained through the Grand Trunk Pacific Development Company. A total of five mines in Ohio with a total coal area of 32,279 acres were operated at one time or another since the company's inception. Between 1912 and 1951 coal was supplied, at cost, to the Grand Trunk system and its successor, Canadian National Railways. On 30 November 1951 the property was sold to the North American Coal Corporation. On 30 October 1952 the Rail and River Coal Company was officially dissolved. RG30 General Inventory
