Covert, Earle L., 1938- : Earle L. Covert was born in Toronto, Ontario. He attended Queen's University in Kingston where he received his medical degree. After he completed his internship, he and his wife moved to Hay River, N.W.T. He became the second doctor in the area and would later become Chief of Medicine at H.H. Williams Hospital in Hay River. Dr. Covert would then become the Medical Officer of Health for most of the Territories. Earle Covert and his wife have two children, Lawrence and Cindy. After 32 years of practice, they moved to the Calgary area where the doctor currently pursues his hobbies of philately and bird watching.
Dr. Covert collects Canadian stamps, revenues, postal stationery, post cards, aerogrammes, as well as tax and duty paid stamps. His other philatelic interests include postal stationery from Russia, South America, Great Britain, India, and Australia. His collections have been exhibited in both Canada and the United States over sixty times and he is credited by many philatelists as legitimizing postal stationery at Canadian exhibitions. In 1988, Dr. Covert was the joint editor with Bill Walton of "Webb's Canadian and Newfoundland postal stationery catalogue." He has also written articles for both BNA Topics and Postal Stationery, and is editor of "Strike, Courier and Local Post." In addition to his writing, Covert is involved in philatelic organizations in Canada. He served as a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Board of the British North American Philatelic Society (BNAPS). Awarded the Order of the Beaver by BNAPS, Covert was the Secretary in 1988, and the first Vice-President in 1996 and helped to guide the computerization of the BNAPS files. In addition to philately, Earle Covert also collects native artwork, Canadian Pacific Railroad memorabilia, and Byron Harmon post cards.
