St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad Company : The St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad Company was incorporated in March 1845 (8 Vic., Cap. 25) to build a railway from the St. Lawrence River opposite Montreal to the international boundary in order to connect with the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad Company line from Portland, Maine. This 142.23 miles of line, including 15.28 between the border and Island Pond, Vermont, was constructed and opened for traffic between 1848 and 1853. Effective 1 July 1853, the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad Company, with five other companies, amalgamated into one company under the name of the Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada (18 Vic., Cap. 33).
