Data Clearing House for the Social Sciences : The Data Clearing House for the Social Sciences in Canada was created jointly in 1973 by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) and the Social Science Research Council of Canada (SSRCC), later known as the Social Science Federation. In 1969, these organizations had discussed creating an inter-university agency to facilitate quantitative research in the social sciences and formed a Joint Steering Committee to explore the issue. As a result of the report of this committee and a feasibility study conducted by H.C. Campbell in 1972, the AUCC and the SSRCC created the Data Clearing House for the Social Sciences the following year. Its purpose was to help researchers find machine-readable data collected by social scientists across Canada. It was to achieve this end by creating an inventory or union list of data sets and distributing it in printed form or by offering a searchable service of their database. It did not collect data itself, only information about what and where data was held in Canada.

The Data Clearing House was incorporated in 1975 as a non-profit organization and was governed by a Board of Directors including representatives from both founding organizations and members-at-large. An executive director and a small permanent staff carried out daily operations. The Data Clearing House never secured stable funding and depended on grants from the Canada Council and contracts with the Department of Supply and Services and the Ministry of State for Science and Technology. Its main product was the CANISISS database, an inventory of data holdings in Canada based on information provided by data libraries and other institutions. In addition, it published a periodical "Bulletin" and a printed version of the database. The "first test edition" of the "Social Science Data Inventory" appeared in early 1977 and the first annual edition appeared in late 1977 or early 1978. It was also the last printed edition because funding for the Data Clearing House dried up in 1979 and the organization ceased to exist. The CANISISS database was transferred to the Social Science Computing Laboratory at the University of Western Ontario.

Custodial history:

After the Data Clearing House for the Social Sciences was closed down in 1979, the Machine Readable Archives Division of the National Archives acquired custody of its textual records in paper format. These records became the responsibility of the Manuscript Division after the MRA was disbanded in the late 1980s.

A small percentage of the fonds is French language material.

The CANISISS database project was transferred to the Social Science Computing Laboratory at the University of Western Ontario after the Data Clearing House closed its doors in 1979. They later sent a copy of the database to all participating institutions and it formed the basis of CULDAT, the Canadian Union List of Machine Readable Data Files. This database has apparently not been updated since the mid-1980s.
