Company of Proprietors of the Champlain and Saint Lawrence Railroad : The Company of Proprietors of the Champlain and Saint Lawrence Railroad, the first Canadian railway, was incorporated by statute in the Province of Lower Canada on 25 February 1832 (2 William. IV, Cap. 58) to build and operate a railroad from Dorchester (St. Johns), Quebec to the St. Lawrence River at La Prairie. The first 16.5 miles between St. Johns and La Prairie was opened for traffic on 21 July 1836. Additional mileage (9.16 between St. Lambert and La Prairie Junction, and 21.08 between St. Johns and the New York state boundary) was opened in 1851 and 1852 respectively.

On 27 May 1857 (20 Vic. Cap. 142) the Company of Proprietors of the Champlain and Saint Lawrence Railroad amalgamated with the Montreal and New York Railroad Company. The new company bore the name Montreal and Champlain Railroad Company. RG30 General Inventory
