Fonds consists of a series of 72 artworks pertaining to the four "Exploration of Canada" series of commemorative postage stamps, which altogether comprised sixteen separate stamps, issued during the period 1986-1989. Most of the artworks are preliminary studies, in various media, but a number are more developed studies, in acrylic, for the final designs. There is also a photograph of Frederick Hagan painting at the French River, October, 1988.

Fonds also contains Frederick Hagan's 35 page personal "Exploration" diary, covering the period 1986-1992 - his narrative of events and/or reminiscences pertaining to the "Exploration of Canada" series of postage stamps. There are also, five files (or envelopes) containing correspondence and/or contractual arrangements with Canada Post, as well as congratulatory letters and postcards from family, friends, acquaintances and the public, also regarding the "Exploration of Canada" series of postage stamps, 1985-1989. Included with the above correspondence are two letters framed together, both dated 1989 - one from H. Gratten Knox Tyrrell to F. Hagan and a duplicate copy of the latter's letter of reply.

Fonds also contains an unaccepted acrylic study, on archival board, for "The First Peoples" theme, in Series I of the "Exploration of Canada" issue of postage stamps.

Hagan, Frederick, 1918-2003 : Robert Frederick Hagan, OSA, PDCC., (1918-2003), artist, studied at the Ontario College of Art (OCA) ca. 1938, and was a member of that college's faculty from 1946 to 1983, and also taught at Georgian College from 1989. He has won the A.J. Casson award from the OCA Alumni Association and his work is represented in many major art collections, including those of the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. He also has over 60 works in the collection of the Grimsby Art Gallery, of Grimsby, Ontario. He has had many solo exhibitions, and a retrospective of his work was held at the Agnes Etherington Art Gallery in 1977. He has participated in many group exhibitions, and in 1939 he participated in the annual exhibition of the Royal Canadian Academy, and the same year his work was included in the exhibition of Canadian art at the New York World's Fair.

In 1985, Hagan was commissioned by Canada Post Corporation, to design a series of sixteen stamps celebrating the exploration of Canada. Hagan died on September 6, 2003 in Newmarket (Ontario). National Archives of Canada Philatelic Collection acquisition files.

General note:

Frederick Hagan's research and preliminary drawings for the "Explorations" series piqued his interest in the subject, leading him to create a limited edition portfolio of lithographs based on the 16 explorers and two others who were not represented in the stamp series. The portfolio was entitled Exploration: landmarks, adventures, realizations.

Custodial history:

The unaccepted acrylic study for "The First Peoples" theme in Series I of the Exploration of Canada postage stamp issue (accession 1992-303 DAP) was acquired from Mr. Hagan through D & J Ritchie Inc., Toronto, Ontario.
