Series consists of the operational, legal and financial records of the Chipman-Holton Knitting Company. The majority of files document the final decade of the company before its merger with Mercury Mills, although a few files date back to the early years of the company. Subject files provide information on Chipman-Holton's operations, machinery, sales organization and customer credit ratings. There are patent and trademark records as well as sales commission files for the company's network of salesmen in the early 1950s. Chipman-Holton Knitting Co : The Chipman-Holton Knitting Co. was incorporated in 1901 by William Holton of Hamilton and John S. Chipman of Easton, Penn. Located in Hamilton, the company specialized in full fashioned nylons and hosiery. Until 1950 it was a profitable enterprise employing approximately 300 hands in its Hamilton mill. But the firm was unable to modernize its facilities and cope with changes in tariff regulations, and thus by 1954 the company was in serious difficulties. Chipman-Holton merged with Mercury Mills in 1954 in an effort to rationalize both firms' manufacturing operations and administration.
