Carman, Margaret, 1795-1877 : Margaret Carman was born at Matilda, Upper Canada, on October 21, the daughter of Michael Carman III and his wife Regina (Rachel) Link, granddaughter of Michael Carman II, who served during the American Revolution in the King's Royal Regiment of New York. The Patriarch of the family Michael Carman I had been driven out of the Mohawk Valley for his loyalist sympathies and arrived in Matilda about a year before his son. Ca 1817 Margaret married Peter Bowen, son of Uriah Bowen, and grandson of Luke Bowen, also a soldier in the KRRNY. Until 1840 Peter Bowen operated the family inn on the original Bowen land grant in Matilda; at that time the family developed a farm on lot 13 of the first concession of Mountain township and probably operated an inn there for ready cash flow. The Bowens were adherents of the Church of England. Peter Bowen was a leader in the building of St. Peter's Church in South Mountain. The first marriage in that church was that of Emma Bowen, their second daughter, to William Elliott, a builder of the Iroquois canal. The older daughter Rachel had earlier married John Gordon Brouse, who operated hotels, firsts in South Mountain, later in Iroquois. Peter Bowen died in 1859 leaving his land to be divided among his widow and four sons. He was buried from St. Peter's Church but interred at St. John's Anglican cemetery in Iroquois. Margaret Bowen lived at first with her son Daniel on his share of the family farm and later with her daughter Rachel Brouse in Iroquois. She died on April 17, and was buried with her husband in St. John's cemetery. Three Bowen sons, Nelson, Peter Carman and Daniel became innkeepers in Mountain, Winchester and Iroquois respectively. Donor's wife, Evelyn Elizabeth Marion Wright, nee Bradley, was descended from Peter Carman Bowen through his daughter Rachel Elizabeth, Mrs. Carson Bradley.
