This sub-series consists of subject files, each one in its turn holding a number of "temporary dockets" filed together by subject/theme. The dockets all bear the inscription "Temporary Dockets. Not to be Transferred Out of the Minister's Office". In outside dates, this sub-series covers material from before and after Dick's tenure of the office of AM/DND. The dockets consist of correspondence, memos, occasional reports and marginalia, and transmittal slips. The files in this sub-series were selected for retention from a much larger run of dockets.
The records in this sub-series reflect the AM/DND's links with various corporate entities, with associations and organizations with a stake or interest in matters dealing with the Canadian Armed Forces, such as the Cadets and veterans' associations. There is much information on conferences, meetings and seminars, as well as military-related events, which highlight issues and help explain government defence policy. This is particularly the case with "information for the minister" files, as well as the "lectures and briefings for the minister" files, consisting of memoranda and briefings on critical issues; these files also elucidate the AM/DND and M/DND relationship. Another significant run of records, the requests for information from MPs and Senators addressed to Dick, are most valuable in reflecting defence issues and government policies. The AM/DND's relationship with Treasury Board and Finance and Accounting, so critical for military procurement, is also revealed in this sub-series.
Over-all, this sub-series is particularly useful in the following areas: it reflects the AM's role in the department; it comments on military/defence policies and programs; it highlights the DND/AM's relationship with core groups with an interest/stake in the Canadian Armed Forces; and it reflects Dick's activities and contribution to the management of DND.
