The conference is opened by Anthea Hall who introduces the main table: Kakswi, representing the Assembly of First Nations; Dwight Dorie, vice-president of the Native Council of Canada; and Bernadette Immaroituk of the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada. In his opening statement Kakswi outlines the purpose of, and preparations for, the visit of Pope John Paul II to Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, and responds to questions from the press gallery.
