Canada. Dept. of National War Services. Nationalities Branch. Editorial Section : The Editorial Section (called a Division in some sources) of the Nationalities Branch of the Department of National War Services was essentially the only permanently staffed office of the Nationalities Branch. It was established informally in early 1942 to do the research, translation and correspondence necessary to monitor and report on the political complexion of the ethnic press in Canada, and to write up, translate and transmit information back to it in the appropriate languages. Thus it carried out the Branch's mandate to inform the Canadian government of trends in ethnic political views in wartime, and to promote support of the war effort among potentially non-participating or alienated recent immigrants. Vladimir Kaye (Kisilewsky) headed the Section's small staff of readers and translators. The Section survived a period of relative inaction in 1943-1945 and was transferred to the Secretary of State as part of the new Citizenship Branch in 1945. RG26 General Inventory
