2 drawings.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:The fonds consists of material accumulated and written by R.H. Webb in the pursuit of his hobby researching military mails. The majority of the collection includes the philatelic albums of R.H. Webb's collection of military covers and postal markings. The series include manuscript, 1814-1984; philatelic albums, 1825-1967; and research notes, 1900-1968.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Webb, Roland Humphrey, 1910-1970 : Roland Humphreys Webb was born in 1910, in Weston Ontario. His education began in Toronto and then Winnipeg where he attended St. John's College School. Roland Webb received his first military training at The Royal Military College in Kingston, and graduated in 1931. Mr. Webb worked briefly on the Seven Sisters Power Project in Manitoba, before joining the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in 1932. He married Ethel Quinn, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Quinn of Ottawa in 1938. The Webb's had three children, two sons, Ralph and Roland and a daughter, Penny.
Roland Webb commanded the 12th Field Regiment and landed with this Regiment on the Normandy beaches on "D" Day. He was awarded the D.S.O. for outstanding bravery. He remained in command until they crossed the Rhine river and then returned to Canada on compassionate grounds to be with his father just prior to his death. Webb served in Canada at Petawawa, Camp Shilo, Jericho Beach Vancouver and Army Headquarters in Ottawa where he was Deputy Director of Administration at the time of retirement in 1961.
After retirement, Webb moved to White Rock, British Columbia and lived there with his family until his death in 1970. In White Rock, Mr. Webb was a member of a local Golf Club, Square Dancing Club, a gardener and fisherman, but his main hobby had always been philately. Mr. Webb had been collecting stamps for over fifty years. It was in 1954 that he joined the Ottawa Philatelic Society and began his sideline of Canadian Forces Mail. He realized that authentic information about Canada'a military postmarks was difficult to come by, and since he was at the army headquarters he could research the files and archives. Webb spent fifteen years hunting and writing his research for various philatelic journals. In addition to the Ottawa Philatelic Society, Webb was a member of British North America Philatelic Society, The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada, The Canadian Philatelic Society of Great Britain, the White Rock Philatelic Society and is an honorary like member of the Ottawa group.
