Description:

Television documentary,examining the history and significance of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Pierre Berton narrates the history of the building of the CPR with archival photographs of construction work across the country and the people involved, including: George Etienne Cartier, Alexander Mackenzie, Edward Blake, Sanford Fleming, Charles Tupper, George Stephen, Donald A. Smith, and James Jerome Hill. Interviewed about the proposed service cutbacks and fare increases being considered by CPR are: N.R. Crump, Chairman of the Board of Canadian Pacific; John Diefenbaker; Don Jamieson, Minister of Transport; Don Secord, President of the Canadian Board of Railway Transportation; Bill McGregor, union leader; George McDevitt, Vice-President of the United Transportation Union; and, Melvin Belli, a lawyer and world traveller. Footage follows a CPR transcontinental journey from Montreal to Vancouver.
