Bayley recalls his placement at Thompson, Manitoba, where he worked at odd jobs in the scrap yard, operating a sand blasting machine and cleaning railroad switches for the International Nickel Company. The interview continues with discussion of Bayley's teaching the company labourers basic English, reading and Canadian history at the local high school after working hours and organizing recreational activities in the community. Other topics include the fierce rivalry among the town's ethnic population, the seriously overcrowded living conditions for the miners and townspeople alike and the social problems of alcoholism, racial discrimination and violence he encountered at Thompson.
