Canadian Philatelic Exhibition (3rd: 1925: Montréal, Québec) : In 1925 the St. Lawrence Stamp Club organized the 3rd Canadian Philatelic Exhibition. The exhibits came from all over Canada, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, South America, Brazil, Japan, Holland, and England.
The exhibition was held in the Mount Royal Hotel in Montreal from October 5 to 9, 1925. Each day a thirty minute address was given by a Philatelist, and entertainment was arranged for out-of-town exhibitors. The exhibition had free admission and guides were available to direct and show visitors around the exhibits. There was a focus on youth. Juniors were encouraged to enter collections with special invitation sent to the schools in Montreal. The organizers felt that if youth were encouraged to visit, they may become interested in the study of philately.
The St.Lawrence Stamp Club originally anticipated 300 entries but it was exceeded with 350 entries, worth several million dollars. The unanticipated response put a strain on space and as a result some entries could only have a portion of the collection shown. The organizers created a floor plan that would allow the visitors to pass before every exhibit. Lloyd's Underwriters were commissioned to insure the stamps on display and during shipping to the exhibition. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers would be on duty during the day and special detectives were hired to work after business hours.
Trophies and prizes were both donated and purchased with the income from the senior philatelists entry fee. Money was raised with a stamp auction of donated lots. A medal was prepared in gold, silver, and bronze, that was illustrated by Prof. W.E. Charles, Department of Architecture, McGill and Geo. F.Hemsley Col., Ltd of Montreal who sunk the die and striked the medals.
The 3rd Canadian Philatelic Exhibition came to an end with a formal dinner. At this dinner a message of congratulations from King George V was read to the attendees.
