Item is a certificate under the banner of the President of the United States of America. Dated 10 September 1866, "in the 91st year of the Independence of the United States" it confers the commission of Captain on Samuel E. St. Onge to rank as such from 31 Dec. 1862 "for gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee." The document is signed by the Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton and by Andrew Johnson. It is endorsed in pencil on the reverse.
