Plant Protection Division : Prior to the CFIA, various administrative units with the department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada were responsible for plant health, including from the late 1970s to 1996, the Seed Division, Feed and Fertilizer Division, and the Plant Health and Production Division of the Plant Health and Products Directorate of the Food Production and Inspection Branch.

In 1996-1997, the Food Production and Inspection Branch was reorganized to align itself with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and the Plant Health and Production Division was renamed the Plant Protection Division. The division was subdivided into the following five sections: Grains and Field Crops, Forestry and Nursery, Potatoes and Horticulture, International Phytosanitary Issues, and Quality Management/Client Services.

The Plant Protection Division began operations under the Animal and Plant Health Directorate within CFIA in 1997. The directorate was later reorganized and renamed, and the Plant Protection Division became part of the Plant Health and Biosecurity Directorate.

Currently, within the Plant Health and Biosecurity Directorate, is the Field Crops and Inputs Division, which itself is divided into the following further sections: Fertilizer Safety; Fertilizer Program; Plant Biosafety Office; Grains and Oilseeds Section; and Seed Section.
